Do I Need Swim Fins?

Do I Need Swim Fins?

I think the title of this blog needs no introduction. As with most choice of words in my life, I like to keep things short and to the point. So I'll get to it -

To answer the question, Do I Need Swim Fins?... short answer is yes. Is it absolutely necessary in order to ride a bellyboard? Not at all. Do swim fins make the bellyboarding experience much more enjoyable? Yes.

Swim fins add the additional boost that you need to get into waves earlier. The earlier you can start riding the wave, the longer the rides will be.

Unfortunately Pelly Boards does not make nor have a special relationship with a fin company that can offer you some sort of discount. With that being said, I am able to give you my honest opinion on which companies I recommend.

Recommendation #1 - Yucca Fins. This is for a few reasons. The most notable being the blog photo, all three pair are Yucca. I have the most experience with this fin and they do offer a variety of flex options from more stiff to softer.

Recommendation #2 - DaFin. Though I have never tried this fin personally, I do see them used a lot and people tend to like them. They do appear a bit wider than Yucca fins, but something to consider. I'm not sure if they offer multiple flex options or not (I don't think they do).

Recommendation #3 - Whatever is in budget. If Yucca and DaFin is at a price point that you do not like, that's fine too. There are other brands online that you can find with a quick search. For almost a year I used the Hydro OG fins and they still work great. They now serve as a back up or loaner pair.

To sum it up: if you want a great bellyboarding experience, I do recommend buying a pair of fins. It doesn't really matter which ones you get as long as they are made for body surfing (you don't want scuba or free diving fins).

As always, we're here to bring bellyboarding to the Emerald Coast and beyond.

Happy Sliding!
